Kia ora koutou TKP whaanau!
The past two weeks have been really busy in the life of our school!
This week we have our Year 6s at camp and our Year 5s have been working with Paula Dewar form the Waikato Institute of Leadership and Sports Studies during their Year 5 leadership week.
As we count down to the end of the year please monitor our Facebook page for the latest information about what is happening at school in the next few weeks!
Soccer Tournament
In Week 5, our Sports Student Leaders, Illa Maunder and Scott Barlow organised a soccer tournament for Hiinau, Patatee, Rooms 14, 15, 16 and 17. It was a great success and the students who took part enjoyed it. Each class played three round-robin games before the semi-finals on the 9th of November. We had our final on the 10th of November and in the final, Room 16 played Hiinau to see who would play against the staff in Week 6. Room 16 won the tournament.
Here are some photos from this amazing week!
Youthtown Bike Safety Week
Thanks to the team from Youthtown Bike Ready who worked with our senior students in Week 5. Youthtown is a not-for-profit organisation sponsored by the Wel Energy Trust. It has been awesome to see our children having fun, and learning bike-handling skills while promoting the benefits of exercise within our school environment.
TKP Athletics Day
The Middle/Senior Athletics Day held on the 16th November was a true testament to the spirited participation of our children. Enthusiastically engaging in every event and displaying unwavering support for their peers. The Whanau Team relays emerged as a highlight, sparking excitement and camaraderie. Due to the overwhelming response, there's even talk of a rematch with a Teachers vs Students relay. A heartfelt thank you to all who attended to support their whaanau and our dedicated staff, whose efforts were instrumental in making this event a success.
Interschool Athletics
Next Friday 1st December our athletics team will head down to Huntly School for the Huntly Cluster Interschool athletics tournament. I just want to say thanks to Whaea Lesieli and Matua Michael for taking our students to this event, and to the team I wish you all the very best on the day!
School Whaanau Picnic
Just a reminder that on the 30th of November, we will have our end-of-year Christmas / Whaanau (Family) Evening’ at 5.30 pm on the bottom field. The purpose of this night is to connect as a community, have some fun, have a picnic dinner with your family, and take part in a few non-competitive activities - eg. races, tug of war, three-legged race etc. The pool will also be open on this night as we look to take advantage of the warm summer nights.
There will be a small free sausage sizzle but please remember to also bring your picnic dinner to enjoy with your whaanau/family.
Classes for 2024
Thank you to the parents who have shared some information regarding their child’s class for 2024. If you haven’t contacted us yet please get in touch as soon as possible before we finalise our classes for 2024 in the next few days.
In 2024, our 3 bilingual classrooms have spaces for tamariki who would like to learn Te Reo Maaori and be immersed in Te Ao Maaori. If this is something you would like to explore please contact me (Brian) at the office or send me an email - principal@tkp.school.nz.
End-of-Year Prizegiving
Our End of Year Prizegiving will be held on Thursday the 14th of December at 9.30 am. Please lock this date in your diaries now as we know that the end of the school year is a busy time for everyone!
Note: If your child is receiving an award at our prizegiving you will be contacted before the event.
Room 1
Swimming has begun in Room 1 for the Summer term and our tamaariki are loving the water. We have been learning how to be safe around the pool by walking and getting into the pool using the ladder. Once we are in the pool we hold onto the bar and get our shoulders and face wet. We make a line and move around the shallow end and make a whirlpool. Then we stop and try to walk the other way, this is fun because the water is trying to push us back. We are practising gliding across the pool and floating with kicking our feet to get to the other side. We love to play with the diving rings and some of us can swim underwater to grab the rings.
Teacher-only days:
We have no remaining teacher-only days in 2023.
In 2024, schools are legally required to be open for 192 days. Every year the Board of Trustees works within the Ministry of Education's guidelines and decides when the school is open for instruction. Teacher-only days are not included in the 192 days as on teacher-only days the school is closed for instruction.
Reminders:
If you are dropping off or picking your child up in a vehicle before and after school - please use the Mahi Road entrance. Wira Street is for bus use and walkers only. If you are using Wira Street during the day to pick up or drop off your child please do not park on the berm and do not park across staff car parks, especially during the morning when staff are arriving preventing them from parking. Thank you for your cooperation!
The bus company that services our school has asked if people could refrain from moving any cones on Wira Street in the afternoon. The cones are there to ensure that the buses have enough room to turn into Wira Street. If you choose to move a cone and park in that space, the school holds no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your vehicle.
Also please use the designated crossing area outside the main entrance (near Room 2), to cross Wira Street. This is the safest place to cross Wira Street in the afternoons so please use this crossing to walk your children across the road.
Parking:
A reminder that parking before and after school has to be in the designated parking areas along Mahi Rd and Wira St. As we work with the police to ensure we maintain safety for all our students and our school community, any car or vehicle parking on the yellow lines and across grass verges will result in your car number plate being alerted to them.
Lastly, if your child normally catches the bus and on any given day your plans change, can you please contact the office to let the school know that your child isn’t catching the bus that day.
Keeping up to date:
Please remember to check our Facebook page for the latest updates from our school - https://www.facebook.com/TKPrimary.

Have a great week!
Ngaa mihi nui
Brian and the Team
In past years TKP has had a very active PTA (Parent Teacher Association) who were successful in running events such as galas, night markets, art auctions, discos and sausage sizzles as fundraisers for our school. The money they generated was used to purchase our school branded gazebos, sets of big books, picture books for use in classrooms etc etc.
Unfortunately Covid restrictions put an end to whole-school events, but if this is something you would now like to see happening again, have some skills to share and/or could spare some time to attend the occasional meeting and help at events, then please get in touch by emailing pta@tkp.school.nz and we will contact you!
