Namaste TKP Whaanau!
Wow, I can not believe that this is our last newsletter for 2023! I am sitting writing this and I am asking myself where has the year gone. It doesn’t feel like that long ago we started the year welcoming our new staff and students. I do remember that we set up our gazebos in the court area ready for our poowhiri only for the rain to play havoc and we ended up in the assembly area!
As we count down to the end of the year please monitor our Facebook page for the latest information about what is happening at school in the next 2 weeks!
Year 6 Camp
Our Year 6 students had a great camp experience at Camp KCC, near Whatawhata in week 7 of this term. We had fantastic weather that kept spirits high so all campers could have a fun-filled week. Adventure activities required tenacity, teamwork skills and endless enthusiasm which our students had in abundance. Rock climbing, abseiling, burma trail, nature walk, rockpool swimming and camp activities were the highlights of the week!. We had an awesome campfire on the last night of camp with many of our school whaanau coming together to spend a fun time together making memories. Thanks to our camp parents that ensured our children were well supported to achieve their camp goals for an unforgettable experience.
Year 5 Leadership Week
Our Year 5 students were involved in a week of Leadership activities in week 8 of this term. They had workshops with Paula Dewar of the University of Waikato which helped them develop their leadership skills and learn about what makes a good leader in their school. The students were then given the opportunity to put their new leadership skills into practice by going on a trip to Ninja Valley and then climbing the Hakarimatas. I know that their resilience and perseverance were definitely tested on that day! We are so proud of the way the Year 5 students conducted themselves during Leadership Week and we are excited to see them become the new leaders of our school in 2024!
School Whaanau Picnic
A huge thank you to all the families who turned out for our School Whaanau/Family picnic last week. It was so nice to see our staff and students engaged in different activities while sharing a sausage sizzle. I really enjoy these events as it gives me a chance to catch up with different families from our learning community and see our staff play sport with our students and parents!
Staffing Update - 2024
At the end of the year, we will have four teachers leaving us Jessica Howes, Kate Moore, Georgia Read, and Sarah-Jayne McLachlan. Jessica is looking for her next adventure outside of education and we wish her all the best in 2024. Kate is leaving the area and moving to the South Island. Sarah-Jayne has found employment closer to home in Hamilton and Georgia is heading off on maternity leave at the end of this year. While we say thank you to these wonderful people for all the mahi they have done for our tamariki, we get to welcome Niki Swart and Tania Riley to our team for 2024.

NMoNM Classes - 2024
In 2024, our 3 bilingual classrooms have spaces for tamariki who would like to learn Te Reo Maaori and be immersed in Te Ao Maaori. If this is something you would like to explore please contact me (Brian) at the office or send me an email - principal@tkp.school.nz.
End-of-Year Prizegiving
Our End of Year Prizegiving will be held next week on Thursday the 14th of December at 9.30 am. I am looking forward to seeing you there!
Note: If your child is receiving an award at our prizegiving you will be contacted before the event.
Teacher-only days:
We have no remaining teacher-only days in 2023.
In 2024, schools are legally required to be open for 192 days. Every year the Board of Trustees works within the Ministry of Education's guidelines and decides when the school is open for instruction. Teacher-only days are not included in the 192 days as on teacher-only days the school is closed for instruction.
Reminders:
If you are dropping off or picking your child up in a vehicle before and after school - please use the Mahi Road entrance. Wira Street is for bus use and walkers only. If you are using Wira Street during the day to pick up or drop off your child please do not park on the berm and do not park across staff car parks, especially during the morning when staff are arriving preventing them from parking. Thank you for your cooperation!
The bus company that services our school has asked if people could refrain from moving any cones on Wira Street in the afternoon. The cones are there to ensure that the buses have enough room to turn into Wira Street. If you choose to move a cone and park in that space, the school holds no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your vehicle.
Also please use the designated crossing area outside the main entrance (near Room 2), to cross Wira Street. This is the safest place to cross Wira Street in the afternoons so please use this crossing to walk your children across the road.
Parking:
A reminder that parking before and after school has to be in the designated parking areas along Mahi Rd and Wira St. As we work with the police to ensure we maintain safety for all our students and our school community, any car or vehicle parking on the yellow lines and across grass verges will result in your car number plate being alerted to them.
Lastly, if your child normally catches the bus and on any given day your plans change, can you please contact the office to let the school know that your child isn’t catching the bus that day.
Keeping up to date:
Please remember to check our Facebook page for the latest updates from our school - https://www.facebook.com/TKPrimary.
