Kia ora koutou,
Welcome to another year of learning at TKP!
I am so glad that we have had a Summer and fun in the sun. One of the highlights of my holidays was travelling to Hastings and spending time with our friends who live there.
This morning we welcomed 27 new students and their families to our school with our first poowhiri for the year. We were led by Whaea Tania and the team from Ngaa Maramara o Ngaa Muka. So to all our new families, I welcome you all to our learning community and I look forward to getting to know you and your children as you settle into our school.
This morning we also welcomed Niki Swart and Tania Riley to our teaching team for 2024. Both Tania and Niki are experienced teachers and we are so lucky to have them join our team.
Tania will be in Room 4 working 4 days a week (Tuesday - Friday), and Keri Kittsen will work in Room 4 on the other day (Monday).
Niki will be in Room 10 working 4 days a week (Monday -Thursday), and Keri will also be in this class on the other day (Friday).
Next Week, 7th of February, our senior leadership team and the students and staff of NMONM will head up to TKC to hand over our year 6 students to the college. Our students are a taonga (treasure) and we must support them as they move to college.

At the end of 2023, Whaea SJ left TKP and moved to a school in Hamilton. Over the holiday period, we advertised the vacancy in Maahoe and we were unable to fill it. This position will continue to be advertised until we find a suitable replacement. Until then Kara Burns will be the teacher in Maahoe. We thank Kara for stepping in to support our children in Maahoe and also to Whaea Kim who will continue to work with the tamariki in Maahoe and ensure they are being exposed to Te Reo Maaori.
Stationery
All children have been issued their stationery packs today. Over the next couple of days, an invoice will be sent home. We would appreciate payment as soon as possible however if you wish to arrange payment please contact Morag in the school office. Thank you in advance for getting the stationery paid. You can pay via the Internet or through EFTPOS in the office.
Sunhats
We are a SunSmart School so uniform sun hats are to be worn during terms 1 and 4. They are available from the school office at $15.00 each.
Meet the Teacher Night
On the 8th of February, we will have our annual ‘Family / Whanau Evening’ at 5.00 pm. The purpose of this night is to meet our staff, have some fun, have a picnic dinner with your family, and take part in a few non-competitive activities - eg. touch rugby, soccer and other games etc. The pool will also be open on this night as we look to take advantage of the warm summer nights.
St Johns in schools:
On the 12th and 13th of February we will have St Johns at school delivering their St Johns in Schools Programme.
St Johns in schools is a fun, interactive and engaging school programme that teaches tamariki (children) how to be lifesavers in an emergency, how to avoid injury, and to become guardians of wellbeing in their community.
If you would like to know more about this programme please follow the link - https://www.stjohn.org.nz/what-we-do/community-programmes/asb-st-john-in-schools-programme/
On the 16th February, the Animal Control Education and Engagement Officer for Waikato District Council, will be visiting our school to present the ‘DOG ‘Smart’ programme to our tamariki.
This 45-minute presentation teaches children to:
- stay safe around dogs
- how to approach a dog they do not know, and
- how to avoid being bitten by a dog.
The presentation will also include the basic responsibilities of dog ownership and give an insight into the daily routine of an Animal Control Officer.
Lost Property:
We have changed the location of our lost property for 2024. The lost property is now located in the shed next to the Junior playground and will be open before and after school if your child loses a piece of their clothing. If you come into school and it is locked please pop over to the office and we will get someone to open it for you!
Duffy Books in Homes
For all our new families TKP is a Duffy Books in Homes school. What this means is that through the Duffy Books in Homes programme your child will bring home 2 books that they personally choose - 3 times a year. These books make this happen! Through being in the Duffy programme the Duffy Theatre will visit us and we will have two Duffy role model assemblies in 2024. At these assemblies, our school will be visited by a Duffy role model or a famous NZ personality who will share the message of it’s cool to read.
If you want to learn more about Duffy Books in Homes, please follow the link - https://www.booksinhomes.org.nz/Home.aspx
Teacher-only days
In 2024, we have planned for three teacher-only days. This could change due to having to fit in allocated MOE curriculum days. If there are going to be any additional teacher-only days added to the calendar we will give you all ample notice of when this may happen
- Our first teacher-only day will take place in the week of the 19th - 23rd of August
- Our second teacher-only day is on the 29th of October
In 2024, schools are legally required to be open for 192 days. Every year the Board of Trustees works within the Ministry of Education's guidelines and decides when the school is open for instruction. Teacher-only days are not included in the 192 days as on teacher-only days the school is closed for instruction.
School closes at 1pm on the 7th of March.
On the 7th of March, the school will close early to support the North Waikato Community Event at the TK Domain. This event will be hosted by our Kaahui Ako - Too Taatou Haerenga. The purpose of the event is to provide our community with an opportunity to engage with the different organisations and health providers that support families in our region. I am looking forward to this event - more information will be sent home in the coming weeks!
Reminders:
If you are dropping off or picking your child up in a vehicle before and after school - please use the Mahi Road entrance. Wira Street is for bus use and walkers only. If you are using Wira Street during the day to pick up or drop off your child please do not park on the berm and do not park across staff car parks, especially during the morning when staff are arriving preventing them from parking. Thank you for your cooperation!
The bus company that services our school has asked if people could refrain from moving any cones on Wira Street in the afternoon. The cones are there to ensure that the buses have enough room to turn into Wira Street. If you choose to move a cone and park in that space, the school holds no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your vehicle.
Also please use the designated crossing area outside the main entrance (near Room 2), to cross Wira Street. This is the safest place to cross Wira Street in the afternoons so please use this crossing to walk your children across the road.
Parking:
A reminder that parking before and after school has to be in the designated parking areas along Mahi Rd and Wira St. As we work with the police to ensure we maintain safety for all our students and our school community, any car or vehicle parking on the yellow lines and across grass verges will result in your car number plate being alerted to them.
Lastly, if your child normally catches the bus and on any given day your plans change, can you please contact the office to let the school know that your child isn’t catching the bus that day.
Keeping up to date:
Please remember to check our Facebook page for the latest updates from our school - https://www.facebook.com/TKPrimary.

In past years TKP has had a very active PTA (Parent Teacher Association) who were successful in running events such as galas, night markets, art auctions, discos and sausage sizzles as fundraisers for our school. The money they generated was used to purchase our school branded gazebos, sets of big books, picture books for use in classrooms etc etc.
Unfortunately Covid restrictions put an end to whole-school events, but if this is something you would now like to see happening again, have some skills to share and/or could spare some time to attend the occasional meeting and help at events, then please get in touch by emailing pta@tkp.school.nz and we will contact you!
