Mālō e lelei and Teena koutou katoa!
Over the next couple of weeks TKP will celebrate both Tonga Language Week and Te Wiki o Te Reo Maaori.
Tonga Language Week
The theme for Uike Lea Faka-Tonga 2023 is 'E tu'uloa 'a e Lea faka-Tongá 'o ka lea'aki 'i 'api, siasí (lotú), mo e nofo-'a-kāingá, which means the Tongan Language will be sustainable if used at home, church and in the wider community.
The word TU’ULOA in the theme has a positive and progressive connotation and means to continuously grow, nurture, and sustain a valued idea, practice, event, or memory in an enduring way.
This year's theme focused on the importance of using lea faka-Tonga. It impressed on us the need not only to understand lea Faka-Tonga, but to also use it as much as possible at home, church and wider community. When you are proud of your language and can speak it, you will also be more grounded in your identity as a Tongan.

Te Wiki o Te Reo Maaori
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, or Māori Language Week, is an annual campaign led by Te Taura Whiri promoting te reo as New Zealand’s language and a language for all New Zealanders. Every year we encourage whānau from across Aotearoa, New Zealand, including organisations, schools, workplaces and homes, to give te reo Māori a go.
The theme of Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori – making the language stronger - will continue this year, picking up from where it left off in 2022. The campaign is an essential piece of the puzzle to achieving the goal of 1 million speakers of te reo Māori in 2040.

Week 6 Poowhiri
Last week we welcomed 7 new students and their families to our TKP Learning Community. It was a beautiful morning and our children from NMoNM led us exceptionally well.
Here are a few photos from our poowhiri
Keeping Ourselves Safe:
I would like to personally thank Constable Tom Pearce who was at our school in Week 5 to teach our students a lesson from the Keeping Ourselves Safe Programme. Our children loved having Tom onsite and I saw a few children get to test out Tom’s handcuffs as I wandered around the school that week!
Daffodil Day
On the 25th of August, we joined the rest of New Zealand in celebrating Daffodil Day! Our school fundraised $344.90 for the cancer society. As always, I want to thank our community for getting behind our Weekend Wear Days and fundraising for another important community organisation.
Parent-Teacher Interviews:
I would also like to thank all the parents who attended our annual Parent-Teacher Interviews over the past two days. There were over 160 bookings by our parents to have an interview with their child’s teacher. It is always great to see our parent community engaging with us about their children's learning and how we can continue developing our Home-School Partnership!
If by some chance you missed out on meeting with your child’s teacher and would like to do so, please contact your child’s teacher and make an appointment.
Grandparents Morning Reminder
On Monday you should have received some information on our Grandparents Morning on the 15th of September. We love having this day every single year as we understand that our children love showing their grandparents around our school. Please remember to return the slip of paper indicating the grandparents who will attend this event for catering purposes.
Lastly, the book fair will be onsite on Grandparent's Morning and will be open between 10.00 am - 11.30 am for grandparents and grandchildren to have a look at. The book fair will be in Room 11.
Wig Wednesday - 13th September
When kids with cancer go through treatment, they often need to brave the world with no hair.
Wig Wednesday is a fun day in September where schools, workplaces and community groups can show their support for these tamariki. Taking part is easy. Simply wear a wig, style a funky hairdo or even shave your head, while raising money for Child Cancer Foundation.
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, so we will be raising funds and awareness for tamariki with cancer all month long.
We will support Wig Wednesday on the 13th of September by having a Weekend Wear Day. Your child will need to bring a gold coin if they want to support this great cause and wear clothing that they would normally wear in the weekend!
Teacher-only days:
In 2023, we have two remaining teacher-only days. This could change and if it does we will give you all ample notice of when this may happen
- Term 4 Teacher-only days
- 24th October 2023
- 13th November 2023 (MOE Sanctioned ToD)
In 2023, schools are legally required to be open for 193 days. Every year the Board of Trustees works within the Ministry of Education's guidelines and decides when the school is open for instruction. Teacher-only days are not included in the 193 days as on teacher-only days the school is closed for instruction.
Reminders:
If you are dropping off or picking your child up in a vehicle before and after school - please use the Mahi Road entrance. Wira Street is for bus use and walkers only. If you are using Wira Street during the day to pick up or drop off your child please do not park on the berm and do not park across staff car parks, especially during the morning when staff are arriving preventing them from parking. Thank you for your cooperation!
The bus company that services our school has asked if people could refrain from moving any cones on Wira Street in the afternoon. The cones are there to ensure that the buses have enough room to turn into Wira Street. If you choose to move a cone and park in that space, the school holds no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your vehicle.
Lastly, if your child normally catches the bus and on any given day your plans change, can you please contact the office to let the school know that your child isn’t catching the bus that day.
