Teena koutou katoa!
I cannot believe it is already Week 5 and we are nearly two thirds of the way through the school year!!
Next week we will have our Mid Term poowhiri to welcome our next group of learners to our school. I always enjoy welcoming our new students to our TKP learning community.
Kaahui Ako Speech Competition:
A big congratulations to Ritchie Raureti (Y5), Jake Vining (Y5) Oscar Cheung (Y6) and Illa Maunder (Y6) who participated in the Too Taatou Haerenga Kaahui Ako Speech Competition. This was held at Te Kauwhata College and our students did us all proud! They spoke with passion, pride and engaged their audiences!
The competition was of a high standard as the best speakers from the different Kaahui Ako schools took part. Not everyone could place either 1st, 2nd, or 3rd but a big shout out from me to Ritchie who placed 1st in the Year 5 competition, Jake who placed 2nd in the Year 5 Competition and Oscar who placed 2nd in the Y6 competition.
I look forward to the years to come and seeing our children have the opportunity to compete in our Kaahui Ako Speech Competition against other speakers from around our region!
School Cross-Country Results
On Friday the 11th of August, we held our annual cross-country race. I would like to thank all the children who took part and ran their race to the best of their ability. Here are some photos and the results from our cross country.
Keeping Ourselves Safe:
Just a reminder that this programme is running this week in our classrooms. Information has already been shared by the school but if you would like more information, please follow this link - https://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/info-parents-whanau
Daffodil Day
On the 25th of August, we will join with the rest of New Zealand in celebrating Daffodil Day! Daffodil Day symbolises hope for people who have been impacted by cancer. This is a great cause to get behind as a school so If your child would like to support this day, they will need to bring a gold coin donation to the school office.
If you would like to learn more about Daffodil Day please click on this link - https://daffodilday.org.nz/
Reminder - Parent Teacher Interviews
Just a reminder that we are having Parent - Teacher Interviews on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th of August.
Bookings are now open at www.schoolinterviews.co.nz - the event code being twr4j. If you do not have Internet access at home please give Morag or Louise a call in the school office and they will be more than happy to make a booking for you.
This year we are also offering the opportunity to have your parent-teacher interview over Google Meet. If this is something you are interested in doing please book it using the school interviews website.
Staffing Update:
At the end of this term, Stephanie Wolfe will be going on maternity leave for the remainder of 2023 and she will be back with us sometime in 2024. Steph, thank you all the hard mahi you have put in with the learners in Room 4 and I know that you and your family are looking forward to the birth of your baby.
In Term 4 Mrs Kara Burns and Mrs Loren Huisman will be the new teachers in Room 4. Kara’s, days in Room 4 will be Monday and Tuesday and Loren will be in Room 4 for the rest of the week.
Both of these educators have been at TKP for a very long time and I am so glad to have their expertise to call on when a vacancy arises.
Teacher-only days:
In 2023, we have three remaining teacher-only days. This could change and if it does we will give you all ample notice of when this may happen
- Our next teacher-only day in Term 3 is the 21st of August
- Term 4 Teacher-only days
- 24th October 2023
- 13th November 2023 (MOE Sanctioned ToD)
In 2023, schools are legally required to be open for 193 days. Every year the Board of Trustees works within the Ministry of Education's guidelines and decides when the school is open for instruction. Teacher-only days are not included in the 193 days as on teacher-only days the school is closed for instruction.
Reminders:
If you are dropping off or picking your child up in a vehicle before and after school - please use the Mahi Road entrance. Wira Street is for bus use and walkers only. If you are using Wira Street during the day to pick up or drop off your child please do not park on the berm and do not park across staff car parks, especially during the morning when staff are arriving preventing them from parking. Thank you for your cooperation!
The bus company that services our school has asked if people could refrain from moving any cones on Wira Street in the afternoon. The cones are there to ensure that the buses have enough room to turn into Wira Street. If you choose to move a cone and park in that space, the school holds no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your vehicle.
Lastly, if your child normally catches the bus and on any given day your plans change, can you please contact the office to let the school know that your child isn’t catching the bus that day.

Enviro-Flavoured Whaanau Day 2023
Enviro-Flavoured Whaanau Day On the last day of Term 2, our Enviroschool Leadership Team led the school in some Enviro-themed activities connected to Matariki. They chose which activities we would do, worked hard with our Enviroschools facilitator, Alex, to practise making the manu tukutuku (kites)... and then realised they would be WAY too hard for the short time slot we had. Using their evaluation and problem solving skills, they adapted the plan to make wind chimes and a Nature Bingo. They practised these activities and led whaanau groups across the school to make collaborative wind chimes with recycled and renewable resources, and explore nature with a fun Bingo chart. |
