Kia Orana and welcome to Cook Island Language Week!
This year’s theme for ‘Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani – Cook Islands Language Week is 'Ātuitui’ia au ki te au peu o tōku kāinga Ipukarea, which means, "connect me to the traditions & culture of my homeland".
The 2023 theme is an extension of last year's theme of ‘Ātuitui’ia au ki te Oneone o tōku ‘Ui Tupuna, or "connect me to the soil of my ancestors".
Where last year's theme was an effort to bridge the 'disconnect' that many of our Cook Islands people are feeling, this year's theme focuses on deepening our people's connection to their culture, and ultimately, their language. It focuses on connecting Cook Islanders to the traditions, cultures and dialects of their many islands.
Speeches:
A big congratulations to all the students who participated in the Year 3 - 4 and Year 5 - 6 Speech Semifinals and Finals that concluded last week. Well done to the following students who won their year-level speech competition:
- Year 3 - Neal Grover who spoke on Artefacts
- Year 4 - Leo Mitchell tried to convince us to buy less clothes
- Year 5 - Ritchie Raureti shared that boys should play netball
- Year 6 - Oscar Cheung gave us a speech on why you should become an Enviroschools leader
Also, I would like to thank Edith Cullen for being the judge at our speech competition this year!
On Wednesday the top two students from our Year 5 and Year 6 school speech competition will take part in the inaugural Too Taatou Haerenga Kaahui Ako Speech Competition. This is being held at Te Kauwhata College at 6.00 pm and includes students from Kimihia School, Ohinewai School, Waikaretu School, Te Paina School, Te Kauwhata College and TKP who will take part in the competition. I am so excited about this event as it is the first time that our students will have the opportunity to compete against other schools in a speech competition.
I will let you know the results of this event in my next newsletter.
Red Nose Day:
Last Friday we had Red Nose Day. It was an amazing day as we fundraised $813.00,, to donate to Cure Kids for child health research in NZ. As always thank you for helping us to fundraise and donate money to the different organisations that are supporting the children and families of our lovely country!
School Cross Country:
On Friday 11th of August, we will be having our annual TKP Cross Country at the Domain. All children are expected to take part in this school-wide event. I look forward to seeing you at this event supporting your children as they compete against their peers. Our Cross Country will start at 11.00 am. Our 7-11 year olds run first and 5-6 year olds run at 12.15pm
Keeping Ourselves Safe:
Just a reminder that this programme will be running between the 14th - 18th of August. Information has already been shared by the school but if you would like more information, please follow this link - https://www.police.govt.nz/advice/personal-and-community-advice/school-portal/resources/successful-relationships/info-parents-whanau
Teacher-only days:
In 2023, we have three remaining teacher-only days. This could change and if it does we will give you all ample notice of when this may happen
- Our next teacher-only day in Term 3 is the 21st of August
- Term 4 Teacher-only days
- 24th October 2023
- 13th November 2023 (MOE Sanctioned ToD)
In 2023, schools are legally required to be open for 193 days. Every year the Board of Trustees works within the Ministry of Education's guidelines and decides when the school is open for instruction. Teacher-only days are not included in the 193 days as on teacher-only days the school is closed for instruction.
Reminders:
If you are dropping off or picking your child up in a vehicle before and after school - please use the Mahi Road entrance. Wira Street is for bus use and walkers only. If you are using Wira Street during the day to pick up or drop off your child please do not park on the berm and do not park across staff car parks, especially during the morning when staff are arriving preventing them from parking. Thank you for your cooperation!
The bus company that services our school has asked if people could refrain from moving any cones on Wira Street in the afternoon. The cones are there to ensure that the buses have enough room to turn into Wira Street. If you choose to move a cone and park in that space, the school holds no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your vehicle.
Lastly, if your child normally catches the bus and on any given day your plans change, can you please contact the office to let the school know that your child isn’t catching the bus that day.

Cross Country 11th of August 2023
Copy of notice from 31st July 2023
CROSS COUNTRY - 11th of August
On Friday the 11th of August, your child/children will be expected to take part in our annual Cross Country event. The 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 year olds will assemble at the domain at 11.10am, as we are hoping to start at 11:20am. The first race of the day will be the 10 & 11 year old boys and then girls. We will then run the 8 & 9 year old boys followed by the 8 & 9 year old girls. The 7 year old boys and girls will run separately after the 8 & 9 year old races. The 5 and 6 year olds will be running at 12:15pm on the day with the older students supporting these children on the cross country course.
Children need to wear their school uniform to school and bring a change of clothes to run the cross country in. We advise the children to wear old clothes, it would be great if they could run in their whanau colours. Preferably the children will wear shoes for this event.
We look forward to seeing you at this event to support your child/children.
