Ni sa bula vinaka!
Term four is always the busiest term at TKP and we have a lot on this term so please keep an eye out on our Facebook page for up-to-date information.
I warmly welcome all the new families we welcomed into our TKP learning community on Monday. We welcomed 12 new students to our school this week. As always I want to thank Whaea Tania and her team from Ngaa Maramara o Ngaa Muka for their effort in ensuring our poowhiri went well!
Road Safety Week @TKP
This week is Road Safety Week at TKP so your child will be engaged in learning about how to be safe on our roads. Next week we are delighted to have Constable Tom Pearse back with us to speak to our junior students about road safety!
Fijian Language Week
This week is also Fijian Language Week. This year’s theme for Macawa ni Vosa Vakaviti – Fijian Language Week is Me vakabulabulataki, vakamareqeti, ka vakaqaqacotaki na vosa vakaviti, which means, Nurture, Preserve and Sustain the Fijian language.
The theme is aligned with the overall concept of the 2023 Pacific Language Weeks' overarching topic of sustainability, the launch of the UNESCO Decade of Indigenous Languages; and the Pacific Languages Strategy.
As a diaspora population, our language, culture and identity is more important now, than ever before. Our role as a community is to be united in nurturing our language through recognising the value of our Fijian language across NZ by collaborating with key stakeholders and with each other to:
- Strengthen pathways and resources for the learning of the Vosa Vakaviti, and learning in the language; (preserve)
- Create environments where Vosa Vakaviti is used more often, and in more spaces. (sustain)
Activities and events in 2023 will be hosted throughout Aotearoa, to embrace Macawa ni Vosa Vakaviti - Fijian Language Week.
Connect online by visiting the official NZ Fijian Language Week Facebook page.
Community Hot Compost Hub
Just a reminder that tomorrow Para Kore (Zero Waste) and a team of experts will be onsite tomorrow to install a hot composting system behind Rooms 11 and 12. This will start after 9.15 am. If you are interested in learning more about this process please pop into school tomorrow. We will also have a shared morning tea and lunch for all our visitors. All our students will get to come down to see the installation of this hot composting system! It is going to be an educationally rich learning experience for everyone!
Before I share our end of Term 3 data I would like to share a few events that we had at the end of Term 3.
On the 13th of September, our tamariki from Hiinau and Patatee visited Aparangi to perform during Te Wiki o Te Reo Maaori. Our students really enjoyed this and I have heard great things from the village about our students' performance!
Also on Friday 15th of September, we had our annual Grandparents Morning. This was a great event for our students as over 150 grandparents were onsite engaging with their grandchildren and watching performances from our Kapa Haka groups.
Here is a photo from our assembly - it was a tight squeeze as the weather was wet!
Our morning tea was great as well as we served all our grandparents a hot drink and some light refreshments.
I would also like to thank all the parents and grandparents who supported our Book Fair during the week of Grandparents Morning. With your help, we raised over $2200 in book sales for our library. Mrs Candice Bateup and Mrs Amber Casey had fun as they were able to choose new books for our library from the stock we had left after the Book Fair. Once again thank you to our school community for supporting our school!
Big Night In and Opening of Beststart Lakeside
On the 20th of September, our students from NMoNM attended the Big Night In event at Te Kauwhata College. Our students performed admirably and represented our school well. Then during the holidays our students from NMoNM attended and performed at the opening of Beststart Lakeside. While a small contingent of students attended they performed as if the whole of NMoNM were with them. I’d like to thank all the parents who supported our tamariki by dropping them off at school for these events outside of school hours!
Here is a photo from the opening of Beststart Lakeside
As principal, I am so proud of our students who represent our school in the community and support our Kaahui Ako schools and ECE’s.
End of Term 3 Achievement update:
Update on our strategic aim of;
‘Delivering equitable learning outcomes for all students at Te Kauwhata Primary School’
I would like to share with you the exciting results of our end of Term 3 data collation. The staff and I are really excited about the progress that our students have made over the past three terms.
As you can see our student's achievement has lifted in reading, writing and maths since the end of Term 2 and since the end of 2022.
As a staff, we are happy with the end of Term 3 results as we have had an overall 9.8% increase in Reading, 15.6% increase in Writing, and 17% increase in Maths, since the end of 2022. This is great growth for our learners as they are making steady progress against our TKP Localised curriculum. Hopefully, in the business of Term 4, we can maintain these amazing results and finish the year strong!
If you have any questions about your own child’s achievement please make an appointment with your child’s teacher.
While we have made some progress towards our strategic goal, we still need your help and one way that you can help us to do this is to send your child to school every day!
In Term 3 our daily average attendance rate was 83%, this meant that approximately 260 students were at school every day out of a possible 313. This meant that most days we had over 50 students away due to sickness or other reasons.
As we look to the warmer months, I would just like to encourage you all to send your children to school if they are well enough to attend.
Teacher-only days:
In 2023, we have two remaining teacher-only days. This could change and if it does we will give you all ample notice of when this may happen
- Term 4 Teacher-only days
- 24th October 2023
- 13th November 2023 (MOE Sanctioned ToD)
In 2023, schools are legally required to be open for 193 days. Every year the Board of Trustees works within the Ministry of Education's guidelines and decides when the school is open for instruction. Teacher-only days are not included in the 193 days as on teacher-only days the school is closed for instruction.
Reminders:
If you are dropping off or picking your child up in a vehicle before and after school - please use the Mahi Road entrance. Wira Street is for bus use and walkers only. If you are using Wira Street during the day to pick up or drop off your child please do not park on the berm and do not park across staff car parks, especially during the morning when staff are arriving preventing them from parking. Thank you for your cooperation!
The bus company that services our school has asked if people could refrain from moving any cones on Wira Street in the afternoon. The cones are there to ensure that the buses have enough room to turn into Wira Street. If you choose to move a cone and park in that space, the school holds no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your vehicle.
Also please use the designated crossing area outside the main entrance (near Room 2), to cross Wira Street. This is the safest place to cross Wira Street in the afternoons so please use this crossing to walk your children across the road.
Lastly, if your child normally catches the bus and on any given day your plans change, can you please contact the office to let the school know that your child isn’t catching the bus that day.
