Kia ora whaanau
I hope you are all well and are looking forward to warmer weather over the next few months. This is my last newsletter for the Term.
Today at TKP is Wig Wednesday. Wig Wednesday is a fun day in September where schools, workplaces and community groups can show their support for tamariki who are going through cancer treatment. A huge thank you to all the students and their families for donating a gold coin! Our students fundraised $211.60 for the Child Cancer Foundation.
Te Wiki o Te Reo Maaori
This week we celebrated Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, or Māori Language Week. All our children have engaged in lessons in Te Reo Maaori as a part of their classroom programme.
The theme of Kia Kaha Te Reo Māori – making the language stronger is the theme for this year's Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. The campaign is an essential piece of the puzzle to achieving the goal of 1 million speakers of te reo Māori in 2040.
If you would like to learn more about Maaori Language Week and the Maaori Language Commission, please follow this link - https://en.tetaurawhiri.govt.nz/te-wiki-2023-announcement
Fern Fuels
On Friday the 8th of September, Brad Rufus from Fern popped into our whole school assembly to present us with 3 Sphero Mini robotic kits and a Cricut machine. These amazing products were one of the technology packages that we could choose from Fern Fuels. We were able to get these amazing technology items because of the many families and businesses who purchase fuel from Fern Fuels. Therefore a huge thank you to the people who support our school through the Fern Fuels!
Hot Composting at TKP
On the 12th of October, Para Kore (Zero Waste) and a team of experts will be coming together to install a hot composting system at TKP. This will be installed behind Room 11 and 12 down on the bottom field. A Hot Composting System will be great for our community as it means we can start to make compost out of our food scraps for our gardens and community gardens. If you are interested in learning more about this process please come to our school on the morning of the 12th of October. We will also have a shared lunch and some kai for all our visitors.
Our students will also get an opportunity to see the hot compost system being installed on the 12th as well.
Inter School Cross Country
On the 1st of September, a group of our students attended the Huntly Sports Cluster Interschool Cross Country. Our children competed really well against all the schools from Huntly and here are the results of our students who placed in the top three of their race -
A huge shout out to all the children who competed at Interschool Cross Country and did us all proud. I am so impressed with the team results and how everyone finished their race in the top 16 of each year group!
Book Fair
If you haven’t seen our post on Facebook about Book Fair here are the Book Fair hours for the rest of the week.
# Note - The Book Fair will be open during Grandparents Day 10.00am - 11.30am (15th September), and also closes on Friday 15th November
Grandparents Morning Reminder
This Friday we are having our Grandparents Morning. The morning will start with our school assembly at 9.00am with performances from our three Kapa Haka Groups. Once assembly is finished our students will take their grandparents back to their classrooms. Our Book Fair will be open from 10.00am to 11.30am.
Teacher-only days:
In 2023, we have two remaining teacher-only days. This could change and if it does we will give you all ample notice of when this may happen
- Term 4 Teacher-only days
- 24th October 2023
- 13th November 2023 (MOE Sanctioned ToD)
In 2023, schools are legally required to be open for 193 days. Every year the Board of Trustees works within the Ministry of Education's guidelines and decides when the school is open for instruction. Teacher-only days are not included in the 193 days as on teacher-only days the school is closed for instruction.
Reminders:
If you are dropping off or picking your child up in a vehicle before and after school - please use the Mahi Road entrance. Wira Street is for bus use and walkers only. If you are using Wira Street during the day to pick up or drop off your child please do not park on the berm and do not park across staff car parks, especially during the morning when staff are arriving preventing them from parking. Thank you for your cooperation!
The bus company that services our school has asked if people could refrain from moving any cones on Wira Street in the afternoon. The cones are there to ensure that the buses have enough room to turn into Wira Street. If you choose to move a cone and park in that space, the school holds no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your vehicle.
Lastly, if your child normally catches the bus and on any given day your plans change, can you please contact the office to let the school know that your child isn’t catching the bus that day.
