Kia ora koutou
Welcome to Term 3, I hope that you and your family had a restful holiday and you had the opportunity to spend time with your children!
I warmly welcome all the new families we welcomed into our TKP learning community on Monday. We welcomed 9 new students to our school this week. As always I want to thank the students from Ngaa Maramara o Ngaa Muka for their effort in ensuring our poowhiri went well!

Red Nose Day
Next Friday the 28th of July, we will have a Weekend Wear Day to support the Cure Kids’ Red Nose Day. Since 1989, the annual Red Nose appeal has been raising funds to support child health research. Over the years, this funding has led to some big breakthroughs in child health, including new insights into paediatric conditions, better care for children with serious diseases, and new ways to diagnose, treat and cure kids.
This is a great way for our school community to show We CARE so I ask that your children bring a gold coin donation on the 28th of July.
If you would like to know more about Red Nose Day please visit - https://www.rednoseday.co.nz/

Matariki
On behalf of our staff and students, I would like to thank everyone who came to our Kaahui Ako Matariki Celebration on the 28th of June. I know that having the event at Te Kauwhata College was not ideal at short notice but over 750 people attended and made it a night to remember! I would like to thank Deborah Hohneck (TKC) for letting us use their premises and ensuring that our celebration would go ahead. To all the volunteers from the Ngaa Maramara o Ngaa Muka Whaanau Committee - thank you for feeding us all and ensuring our raffle was successful! A big thank you to Toi Ako and Te Kauwhata Library for supporting this event!
Lastly to all the students who performed - you were amazing!
Here are some photos from the night:
Mid-Year School Achievement -
Update on our strategic aim of;
‘Delivering equitable learning outcomes for all students at Te Kauwhata Primary School’
The end of Term 2 is always a midpoint check for the school to collect assessment information and for the school to see how learners are tracking in their ongoing achievement. It is also a good time to reflect upon our strategic goal and to see how we are supporting all our learners.
The table below summarises the percentage of students who are currently on track to achieve the expected level and the growth that we have had since the end of Term 1!
At a glance…
Reading Achievement - Since the end of T1:
- 14.5% increase in the number of students achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 18.4% increase in the number of Maaori students achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 10% increase in the number of NZE students achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 14.8% increase in the number of boys achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 14.6% increase in the number of girls achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 14.9% increase in the number of Pacific Learners achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
Writing Achievement - Since the end of T1:
- 13.2% increase in the number of students achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 16.3% increase in the number of Maaori students achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 6.7% increase in the number of NZE students achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 12% increase in the number of boys achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 14.7% increase in the number of girls achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 22.2% increase in the number of Pacific Learners achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
Maths Achievement - Since the end of T1:
- 17.8% increase in the number of students achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 20.7% increase in the number of Maaori students achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 10.2% increase in the number of NZE students achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 14.4% increase in the number of boys achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 21.1% increase in the number of girls achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
- 25.9% increase in the number of Pacific Learners achieving ‘at’ and ‘above’ the curriculum expectation since the end of T1.
As you can see there has been improvement in reading, writing and maths across all groups since the end of Term 1. This means we have more learners who are on track to achieve the expected curriculum level across these three areas.
As a school, we are happy with the end of Term 2 results as we have had an overall 14.5% increase in Reading, 13.2% increase in Writing, and 17.8% increase in Maths, since the end of Term 1. Hopefully, over the next two terms, we will continue to see growth in our learners as they look to extend and challenge themselves in class!
While we have made some progress towards our strategic goal, we also believe we can increase the percentages of all learners achieving at the expected curriculum level by the end of the year. One way that you can help us to do this, is to send your child to school everyday! If your child is at school they have more opportunities to learn and to engage with quality teaching and learning!
Lastly, if you have any questions about your own child’s achievement please make an appointment with your child’s teacher. We look forward to working with you all as we partner together to improve the educational outcomes for our tamariki!
Teacher-only days:
In 2023, we have three remaining teacher-only days. This could change and if it does we will give you all ample notice of when this may happen
- Our next teacher-only day in Term 3 is the 21st of August (this date has changed as our staff will attend the Koroneihana on the 21st of August to align with some schools in our Kaahui Ako)
- Term 4 Teacher-only days
- 24th October 2023
- 13th November 2023 (MOE Sanctioned ToD)
In 2023, schools are legally required to be open for 193 days. Every year the Board of Trustees works within the Ministry of Education's guidelines and decides when the school is open for instruction. Teacher-only days are not included in the 193 days as on teacher-only days the school is closed for instruction.
Reminders:
If you are dropping off or picking your child up in a vehicle before and after school - please use the Mahi Road entrance. Wira Street is for bus use and walkers only. If you are using Wira Street during the day to pick up or drop off your child please do not park on the berm and do not park across staff car parks, especially during the morning when staff are arriving preventing them from parking. Thank you for your cooperation!
The bus company that services our school has asked if people could refrain from moving any cones on Wira Street in the afternoon. The cones are there to ensure that the buses have enough room to turn into Wira Street. If you choose to move a cone and park in that space, the school holds no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your vehicle.
Lastly, if your child normally catches the bus and on any given day your plans change, can you please contact the office to let the school know that your child isn’t catching the bus that day.
