Kia ora e te whaanau
The past two weeks have been so busy at TKP and it all started with our annual AG day on the 11th of October!
AG Day
I would like to thank all the participants, their parents, and grandparents who attended our annual AG. This year we had more participants than in previous years and it was so good to have children with calves in 2023. Over 25 students entered with a lamb, a goat, or a calf. I am excited by this and hopefully we will see more children take part in our AG day in 2024

I would also like to thank Carolyn Roberts and the team who made this day a special one for our students and their families.
The next big thing that happened during the last two weeks was the installation of our hot composting system behind Room 11 on the 12th of October.
Te Kauwhata Community Hot Compost Hub
On Thursday 12th October, TKP became the hosts of a new community hot compost hub, facilitated and supported by Para Kore. Waikato District Council funded this project after conversations with Paul Murray (aka X-Man) from Para Kore and Waikato District Councillor to find a solution to our paper towel problem and school lunch food waste.
The day began with a mihi whakatau as we welcomed Ngaa Muka, Pare Kore Zero Waste, Waikato District Council, Huntly Community Gardens, and the CarbonCycle Company. Throughout the day we were joined by local councillors, Te Mahau (MOE) representatives, and our Kaahui Ako leaders and children. Everyone was excited to get involved in this kaupapa.
We then got stuck into the hard mahi, assembling the frame and shovelling mulch to create a rodent-proof base under the frame. Along the way, Tim and Richard from CarbonCycle Company talked us through the process and the science behind it all. Our Enviroschool Team with Rhonda from the TK Community Garden learned what we need to make the best environment for the fungi, bacteria and invertebrates that do the real hard work- breaking down the food and garden scraps into great compost to return to our school and community gardens. With aged mulch supplied by Carbon Cycle Compost, sawdust, grass clippings, and food scraps, we were able to begin our hot compost journey, filling up the first section. The Enviroschools Team practised layering the carbon (e.g. sawdust, mulch) and nitrogen (e.g. food scraps, grass clippings) and making sure the layers had enough water and air to make it thrive.
We were blown away by how many people and organisations contributed to the success of this installation day, and look forward to learning and sharing more of our journey towards zero waste at TKP.
At this stage, we are still setting up our systems and will not be taking any food scraps or garden clippings from the community, but we look forward to putting it out to the whole community when we are ready and prepared to accept more.
Ngaa mihi nui,
Alice and Tania
Here are some photos from the installation:
Last Friday we had our annual Wendy Hickey Memorial Weekend Wear Day and we raised $200.00 to donate to TK Community House. For those of you who are new to our school and community, Wendy was one of our teachers who sadly lost her battle with Cancer in 2015. She was a strong advocate for TK Community House so every year we have a Weekend Wear Day to remember Wendy but also support an amazing local organisation that helps so many people in Te Kauwhata.
Loud Shirt Day - Friday 27th October
Loud Shirt Day is the national fundraising campaign for The Hearing House and the Southern Cochlear Implant Programme (SCIP) – the only two charities in New Zealand dedicated to helping children and adults with cochlear implants learn to listen and communicate.
Loud Shirt Day is this Friday. If you would like your child to take part in this event they need to come to school with a gold coin donation and wear a Loud Shirt!
Life Education
Next Week we will have the Life Education Caravan onsite. The Life Education Trust is a charity that educates and empowers children to make healthy choices so they can live full and healthy lives. Every year they teach over 250,000 children about their bodies, friendships, identity, food and nutrition and helpful and harmful substances.
As the visit from Life Education is a part of our school curriculum there is no cost to you as our MOE-funded donations scheme will cover the cost of your child attending the programme.
Looking ahead:
During the week of the 6th - 10th of November, we will have Youthtown and St Johns onsite working with our tamariki! Our Year 4 - 6’s will take part in the Bike Ready programme and the whole school will get to work with St Johns.
Bike Ready:
Bike Ready is a program delivered within the school structure which works with year 5 – 8 students. Our staff deliver the Bike Ready programme so the students can achieve their Grade 1 Bike Ready certificate. The programme works through 10 outcomes across 5 sessions so the young people learn about bike riding in a fun environment at school. Youthtown will provide 30 bikes and 30 helmets along with 2 instructors to deliver the programme at TKP.
Note: Your child does not need to bring a bike or helmet to school to take part in this programme.
St Johns in schools:
Our fun, interactive and engaging school programme teaches tamariki (children) how to be lifesavers in an emergency, how to avoid injury, and about becoming guardians of wellbeing in their community.
If you would like to know more about this programme please follow the link - https://www.stjohn.org.nz/what-we-do/community-programmes/asb-st-john-in-schools-programme/
New School Delay -
Last month the Board of Trustees received this email from Te Mahau (the new name for Ministry of Education), in regards to the new school site at Lakeside.
The Board, my staff and I are extremely disappointed in this decision as we were all looking forward to the new school in 2025. The Board has sent a response to the Ministry to hold them to account for this email and we will continue to keep you updated if there are any changes to the timeline.
Teacher-only days:
We have one remaining teacher-only day which is on the 13th of November. This is a Ministry of Education sanctioned teacher only day. On this day the schools from our Kaahui Ako will get together to support teachers to develop an understanding of the changes that are happening in the next couple of years with the new refreshed curriculum.
Note: In 2023, schools are legally required to be open for 193 days. Every year the Board of Trustees works within the Ministry of Education's guidelines and decides when the school is open for instruction. Teacher-only days are not included in the 193 days as on teacher-only days the school is closed for instruction.
Reminders:
If you are dropping off or picking your child up in a vehicle before and after school - please use the Mahi Road entrance. Wira Street is for bus use and walkers only. If you are using Wira Street during the day to pick up or drop off your child please do not park on the berm and do not park across staff car parks, especially during the morning when staff are arriving preventing them from parking. Thank you for your cooperation!
The bus company that services our school has asked if people could refrain from moving any cones on Wira Street in the afternoon. The cones are there to ensure that the buses have enough room to turn into Wira Street. If you choose to move a cone and park in that space, the school holds no responsibility for any damage that may occur to your vehicle.
Also please use the designated crossing area outside the main entrance (near Room 2), to cross Wira Street. This is the safest place to cross Wira Street in the afternoons so please use this crossing to walk your children across the road.
Lastly, if your child normally catches the bus and on any given day your plans change, can you please contact the office to let the school know that your child isn’t catching the bus that day.
